A week after launching LexAmp, we want to share some thinking behind the AI Legal ChatBox—what it does well, where it has limits, and how we designed around those limits.
Legal questions are common. Legal help is expensive. A simple question like "can my landlord do this?" shouldn't require a $300/hour consultation, but for most people, the alternative is either searching through confusing government websites or asking friends who may not know any better.
We built the ChatBox to fill this gap: affordable, instant access to legal information for everyday questions.
The ChatBox excels at explaining legal concepts in plain language, identifying relevant laws for a given situation, outlining options and potential next steps, and drafting simple documents like demand letters or notices.
For routine questions—understanding a lease term, knowing your consumer rights, figuring out small claims court procedures—it provides genuinely useful guidance.
We designed the system to recognize its limits. It will not provide advice on complex litigation, handle matters involving significant assets or criminal liability, or replace professional judgment on high-stakes decisions.
When the ChatBox detects a situation beyond its scope, it says so and recommends consulting a lawyer. We also built in connections to licensed professionals for users who need that escalation.
Legal questions are sensitive. All conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest. We collect only what's necessary to provide the service and follow PIPEDA requirements for Canadian users. Our Privacy Policy details exactly what data we collect and how it's used.
Canada is multilingual, and legal resources should be too. The ChatBox supports English, French, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
We kept pricing simple: $10 USD/month for subscribers, with a free tier for users who want to try before committing.
